Background:

Built in 1897 between Chichester and the South Downs, West Dean was remodelled in 1965 and remains a 'beautiful building in an excellent state of repair' comprising three large classrooms and a fourth smaller one (which is used as an information and communication technology room), and a large central hall housing a central library, which is also used as a dining room and indoor PE area. The school has a large surfaced area, a large playing field, an imaginative play area and outdoor learner swimming pool. Pupils participate in a 'wide range' of sporting activities such as football, netball, hockey, cricket, rounders, athletics and swimming and the school's team reached the primary schools national finals in summer 2000. The school's curriculum covers all the core and foundation subjects, with French taught from Year 3 onwards. The school has 'strong links' with the church and community and charity fund-raising is well supported.
