Background:

Pound Hill School was built as a junior school in 1956 and converted to a middle school in 1971. Facilities include classrooms, a science laboratory with the full support of a senior laboratory assistant, an ICT room resourced with a bank of internet linked PCs for whole class lessons, a library and a music suite, run by a full time music specialist. The school has 'extensively enlarged and redeveloped' the playground and playing fields, including a variety of pitches, an athletics track and a conservation area with a large pond. The school is in the middle of Pound Hill, on the east side of Crawley and is about a mile from the town centre, 300 yards from Three Bridges railway station and two minutes from the M23 with a choice of junctions. Gatwick airport is five minutes away. The school is proud of its links with the parents and has a 'wide range of contacts with the community that benefits the pupils'. The school'started to introduce laptop computers in 1998 and created a dedicated class of pupils using laptops at the age of nine for 80 per cent of the day. A third class was created for the 1999/2000 academic year. The school also offers free evening classes to parents to help them develop their ITC skills. It has an 'excellent' sporting record, achieving competition success on an annual basis in a number of sports, and many pupils go on to compete at county and professional level, particularly in football and hockey. Every year the pupils work to support a number of charities through a range of events. As the school is situated close to the airport, it has a multi-cultural representation with pupils from 19 countries, comprising 15 per cent of the number of pupils.
