Background:

In a central position next to bus and train stations in the county town of West Sussex, the school was formed in 1972 following the amalgamation of the Girls' High School and the Lancastrian Secondary School. The high school building dates from the turn of the century and currently houses the upper school. The lower school shares the Kingsham Campus, including an all-weather Astroturf pitch, with the High School for Boys. The Lancastrian Building opened in 1958 on the Kingsham site and new premises for humanities opened in 1989 and for music in 1993. There are now plans to locate the whole school on a single site, which will allow the development of a joint sixth form with the adjacent High School for Boys. The school is over-subscribed, with 1.5 applications per place. It is 'well-placed to foster strong links with Chichester Cathedral and Festival Theatre' and offers 'strong' competitive sport with representation at national and local level. Its 'traditional strength' in modern languages, English and humanities is 'balanced by excellence in mathematics, science and technology'. The school offers links with industry and commerce and boasts 'high academic standards, good discipline and courtesy in an atmosphere of care for each girl's individual needs'.
