Background:

Bishop Luffa School is a voluntary aided Church of England mixed comprehensive school of 1390 pupils. Founded in 1963, the school's voluntary aided status gives the governors extra powers and responsibilities for the control of the school. Since September 1997, Bishop Luffa School has acquired Technology College Status and has become a Beacon school and since September 2003, Leading Edge Status. In 2001, 2002 and 2003 the school received a DfES Achievement Award for excellence. The buildings are divided into subject areas with a large design and technology centre and a science laboratory block consisting of ten laboratories with four preparatory rooms. The school has an excellent resource centre, a gymnasium and multi-gym, a four-court sports hall and a recently enlarged library. A major new classroom building was opened in September 2004. It provides four new classrooms and six refurbished classrooms, all linked to information and communication technology by wireless technology together with offices and two seminar rooms. Technology college status has enabled the school to improve further its information and communication facilities as well as those in the areas of mathematics, science and technology. The school aims to encourage excellence in all aspects of school life and to measure success in terms of progress as well as attainment. The school offers what is best in education in its widest sense, enlightened by an understanding of the importance of the spiritual dimension to life.
